Since October 7, 2023, Israel has sustained its offensive against Gaza, which commenced after a Hamas assault. This aggressive action resulted in an estimated 1,200 fatalities, with the death toll among Palestinians in Gaza surpassing 20,000 due to Israeli interventions.

On January 2, according to official statements from Lebanon’s state media, a drone strike targeted the Hamas office in southern Beirut, resulting in the demise of Saleh Al-Arouri and at least three other individuals.

The 57-year-old Al-Arouri had experienced multiple incarcerations in Israeli prisons. Notably, he gained freedom in March 2010, part of a broader exchange aimed at securing the release of Gilad Shalit, an IDF corporal who Hamas had abducted in 2006. Al-Arouri played a pivotal role in the subsequent negotiations that facilitated the release of over 1,000 Palestinian detainees in 2011.

Following his release, Al-Arouri relocated to Istanbul. However, he had to shift his base after Israel mended its diplomatic relations with Turkey. Before his demise, Al-Arouri maintained strong ties with Iran and the Hezbollah faction in Lebanon.

In recent times, Al-Arouri had emerged as a prominent voice for Hamas, particularly regarding the conflict in Gaza. In a December interview with Al Jazeera, he emphasized Hamas’s stance, indicating that any discussions concerning prisoner exchanges with Israel would be contingent upon Israel halting its offensive operations in Gaza. Al-Arouri affirmed Hamas’s preparedness for diverse military scenarios, asserting their unwavering commitment to their cause.

In 2015, the United States classified him as a “global terrorist,” offering a substantial reward of five million dollars for any relevant information. Reacting to the news, Israel’s former UN representative, Danny Danon, commended the security agencies for eliminating Al-Arouri, underscoring a commitment to addressing those involved in prior hostilities.
