Nana Kwame Ampadu biography and songsana Kwame Ampadu was born on March 31st, 1945 at Obo Kwahu to Opanin Kwame Ampadu and Madam Mercy Afua Ntiriwaa. His father was the head of the Asona Clan of Obo Kwahu whiles Nana Ampadu’s mother was a devoted presbyter of Obo Kwahu.

Nana Kwame Ampadu started schooling from 1950-1952 in Obo Roman Catholic primary school. He further continued from class 3 to junior at Adeemmra near Aboam in the Afframs Plains in 1955.

He had his senior high education at Obo Anglican Middle Boys. This is where he started singing and was made a chorister and also appointed to select a song all the time.

Career

He began his career as a singer in 1963. He formed a band called African Brothers Band with his brother Rover Amo Ampadu with others such as Eddie Donkor, Nana Nyarko, Yaw Asante, Yaw Owusu, Kwame Anim, Joe Dee, Oppong Kyekyeku, and Koo Ofori.

After forming his own band he released some hits songs such as Ntoboase, Afutusem, Scholarship, Me Nsoromma Bepue but he gave them to Ramblers Band in exchange to be introduced to Phillips West Africa Ltd., recording publishers where he recorded his first two songs.

It was after Nana Ampadu got introduced to Phillips West Africa Ltd., that he became very popular with his band and music. In 1967 he released his song Ebi Te Yie (or “Some Are Well Seated”), a song that was seen as potentially critical of the then-governing National Liberation Council and disappeared from the airwaves, only returning after the end of military rule.

In 1973 he won a nationwide competition in Ghana to be crowned the Odwontofoohene, or “Singer-in-Chief”.
