Houston Rockets selected Sampson with the first overall pick in the 1983 NBA Draft. Sampson then spent 1989–1990 with the Sacramento Kings before playing for the Washington Bullets in 1991. After playing for CBA Rockford Lightning from 1994 to 1995 and Unicaja Ronda in Spain in 1992, his football career came to an end. Sampson then transitioned into coaching during the football season of 1999–2000, leading Richmond Percussion in the IBL.
