He was approximately 7 feet tall by the time he was in the ninth grade and reached 7 feet 1 within two years of that. He was the star of his high school team and played basketball while in school. In 1978 and 1979, he led the squad to the state championships.
Sampson was actively courted by numerous institutions to play basketball as a result of his high school basketball stardom. He ultimately suited up as the center for the University of Virginia.
