On Monday 24th January 2022, Burkina Faso’s army ousted President Roch Kabore, and also suspended the constitution, by dissolving the government and the national assembly, and closed the country’s borders.
The announcement stated the deterioration of the security situation and what the army described as Kabore’s inability to unite the West African nation and effectively respond to challenges, which include an Islamist insurgency.
The announcement was signed by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba and read by another officer on state television.
According to the announcement read the takeover had been carried out without violence and that those detained were at a secure location.
“A decision made with the sole purpose of allowing our country to get back on the right track,” said Capt. Sidsoré Kader Ouedraogo, flanked by 13 men in camouflage gear.
They have suspended the constitution, dissolved the government and closed the borders, Ouedraogo said, without spilling any blood. They are holding President Roch Marc Kaboré and other politicians in a safe place, he added, that “respects their dignity.”
