Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has come out to explain why he decided to scrap the payment of nursing and teacher trainee allowance when he is in power a decade ago.

According to Mr. Mahama, his decision to cancel the payment of nursing and teacher trainee allowance was motivated by his quest to build more health infrastructure in the country.

Furthermore, the current NDC flagbearer, who was heavily criticized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for abolishing the payment of nursing and teacher trainee allowance has promised to reinstate the policy once he is voted into power.

Explaining further on why the payment of nursing and teacher trainee allowance was abolished, he stated that he government realized it took time for nurses who graduated from nursing training schools to be posted to their various stations.

In line with this fact, he decided to scrap the payment of nursing and teacher trainee allowance, in order to gather funds to build more health facilities, so that there would be more spaces to be occupied by nurses and the availability of more jobs for these nurses who graduate from the various nursing training colleges.

Adding to this, Mr. Mahama said all his government wanted to do was to build more hospitals and health centers to accommodate graduate nurses but some people took political advantage of the situation and said they will continue to pay the allowances because they could.
