Hyattsville Mayor Kevin Ward has passed away. On Wednesday afternoon, the city of Hyattsville released a statement saying that their openly homosexual mayor, Kevin Ward, had died in an apparent suicide the day before.

Kevin served as Mayor of Hyattsville, Maryland, prior to his death. “The city of Hyattsville reports with great sadness that our beloved Mayor Kevin passed away yesterday, Jan. 25, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,”
“Mayor Ward was a valued and trusted leader and a fierce advocate for all the people of Hyattsville. We are heartbroken at this loss and extend our deepest sympathy to the Mayor’s family,” a news release from the city said.
On Twitter, Rep. Anthony Brown, who represents Maryland’s Fourth District, remarked, “My heart is with Mayor Ward’s family and the people of Hyattsville after the loss of this dedicated, thoughtful and fiercely passionate public servant.”
State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy (D), who called Ward a personal friend, said he had been unafraid “to live his truth as the first openly gay mayor of Hyattsville.”

Kevin Ward had previously worked as a technology consultant in the fields of education and human services. After that, he went on to serve on the municipal council.
