Biyi Bandele Biography

Bandele was born in 1967 in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Nigeria to Yoruba parents. His father, Solomon Bandele Thomas, served in the Burma Campaign during WWII, when Nigeria was still a part of the British Empire. Bandele spent his first 18 years of life in the country’s north-central region. Bandele aspired to be a writer and won a short-story competition when he was 14 years old.

Later, he relocated to Lagos and began studying drama at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife in 1987. He won the International Student Playscript Competition in 1989 with an unpublished play called Rain, and the British Council Lagos Award in 1990 for a collection of poems. Bandele collaborated with the Royal Court Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as writing radio drama and television screenplays.

Rain, Marching for Fausa (1993), Resurrections in the Season of the Longest Drought (1994), Two Horsemen (1994), chosen as Best New Play at the 1994 London New Plays Festival, Death Catches the Hunter and Me and the Boys (published in one volume, 1995), and Oroonoko, an adaptation of Aphra Behn’s 17th-century novel of the same name, are among his plays. He successfully adapted Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart in 1997.

Brixton Stories, Bandele’s stage adaptation of his own novel The Street (1999), premiered in 2001 and was published in a single volume alongside his 1999 play Happy Birthday Mister Deka. The Man Who Came in from the Back of Beyond (1991) and The Street (1999) by Biyi Bandele have been described as “rewarding reading, capable of wild surrealism and wit as well as political engagement.” Burma Boy, his 2007 novel, was called “a fine achievement” by Tony Gould in The Independent and praised for giving previously unheard Africans a voice.
