Calvin O. Butts III is an American pastor and civil rights activist. He is the founder of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York City.

Butts III was born on July 19, 1949, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in the United States of America to Eloise Edwards and Calvin O. Butts II. His father was a sharecropper and his mother was a domestic worker who died when he was three years old. Butts attended public schools before moving to New York City at age 12 to live with his grandmother and uncle.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 6, 1944 to parents who were both educators at a historically black college preparatory school in Harlem. She attended Syracuse University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English literature and her master’s degree in library science.

She married Calvin O. Butts III on September 9, 1967 and they had two children together, Kofi and Nana Kwaku Butts Jr., before divorcing him after 18 years of marriage in 1985 due to his infidelity with another woman who he would eventually marry after divorcing Patricia.
