The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) experience can be incredibly difficult and stressful for families. That’s where Friends of NICU comes in. Founded in September 2018 by Nana Abena Afriyie Kwarkye Gyang after her own traumatic NICU experience, Friends of NICU aims to provide support and community for vulnerable families navigating the NICU.

Providing Support When It’s Needed Most

Having a child in the NICU is scary and isolating. From the medical concerns to being separated from your newborn, it’s a lot for any parent to handle. Friends of NICU was created to provide the support system Nana wished she had during her own NICU journey.

Through advocacy, outreach, and sharing stories, Friends of NICU has built a compassionate community for NICU families. They understand the challenges families face, from financial stress to emotional trauma, and work to provide resources, comfort, and care.

Friends of NICU Mission

1. To connect the purple dots of preemie parents to a source of hope, a safe place and fortitude through shared experiences.

2. This is a journey we at Friends of NICU want to walk with every preemie parent.

3. To support the Ghanaian preemie parent especially women as the purple care givers blessed with the prematurity journey.

4. Creating and atmosphere on the path of prematurity nurtured into giant miracles.

5. Friends of NICUs’ purpose is beyond the nicu centers. It transcends to reaching the last parent at the four corners

Growing a Network of Support

What started as one woman’s passion has grown into an organization making a real difference for NICU families. Friends of NICU now has an active presence in Greater Accra and Bono East, with plans to expand further.

By building a network of support, Friends of NICU gives families a sense of hope and resilience. Families can connect with others who truly understand what they are going through. They also provide care packages, counseling services, and more to meet tangible needs as well.

The NICU journey can feel like an isolating, terrifying experience. But Friends of NICU is helping change that. Through community, compassion, and practical support, they are bringing light and hope to families during a dark and difficult time.
