The current President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has announced that government will include mental health care in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in 2024 to address the increasing rate of mental health related issues in the country.

In a recent disclosure at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons Maiden Awards Night on Tuesday, 12 December, 2024, Nana Addo stated that government has come to realize that the key to achieving the target of universal coverage lies on the availability of specialists serving all health care facilities and hospitals in the country.

According to Nana Addo, the government is aiming at a higher target that will ensure every doctor who graduates from medical school proceeds straight into specialization right after house officer training.

He reiterated that this initiative spearheaded by his government will ensure citizens of Ghana have the best level of medical service delivery.

Furthermore, Nana Addo stated that his government is committed to improving access to provision of excellent health infrastructure, equipment and logistics as part of its cause to attain universal health coverage.
