Nursing in Ghana
Before 1899, in Ghana the sick were only cared for by family and friends, who bathed and cared for them without any scientific expertise; no one pursued nursing as a career. The signing of the 1844 treaty brought the southern part of the Gold Coast under the sovereignty of the British officers, including medical officers required the services of trained nurses.
Young men with fairly good speaking of English were employed mostly in the practical nature of nursing by number of lectures on the various aspects for them.
As more medical services were provided across the length and breath of the country, the demand for more nurses increased, both governmental and non-governmental organizations trained nurses using their own standards and scope. Types of Nurses in Ghana
Out of about 115 650 health workers employed in the public sector in 2018, 58% were nurses and midwives whose numbers increased by 370% between 2008 and 2018. Among the nursing and midwifery workforce, 31% and 22% are enrolled nurses and community health nurses respectively (who are trained for 2 years).
