Qatar Makes History With 2-0 Defeat To Ecuador

Qatar became the only host nation to lose their first World Cup game, falling 2-0 to Ecuador on Sunday at Al Bayt Stadium.

Enner Valencia’s goal less than three minutes into the game highlighted the Maroons’ inexperience and lack of talent in their first World Cup appearance. A goal that was later overturned due to offside.

Ecuador’s captain Valencia won a penalty after being fouled by goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb and converted it superbly to score the game’s first goal 13 minutes later. The South Americans doubled their lead after 31 minutes. Valencia once more

Angelo Preciado’s perfect lofted cross into the box in the 31st minute led to the second goal, which was headed in by the Fenerbahçe striker. Ecuador won the first period 2-0.

With Qatar also having some strong stretches in the game during the second half, Ecuador appeared to have taken a step back.

Ecuador now leads Group A with three points, ahead of tomorrow’s match between Senegal and the Netherlands.
