He began his career at CF Balaguer in the Tercera División, where he played his first competitive game for the club’s youth team at the age of nine.

In 1991, Roberto made his Real Zaragoza B team debut, however, he spent the majority of his first three seasons at the club playing for the youth teams. Dave Whelan, Chairman of Wigan Athletic, offered Martnez the option to come to England, and he accepted on a free transfer on July 25, 1995.
Roberto received his first awards at the end of the 1996–97 season when Wigan won as Division Three Champions. Roberto signed a three-year deal with Scottish club Motherwell in July 2001.
He joined Swansea City on a short-term contract until the end of the season in January 2003, becoming captain and helping to keep the team in the Football League on the final day of the season.
