Samuel Takyi ended Ghana’s nearly three decades wait for an Olympic medal with a ‘never say die’ display against Colombia’s David Avila Ceiber in the featherweight fight in Tokyo.

The 20 year old Ghanaian staged a stunning comeback to secure a 3-2 split decision victory in the early hours of Sunday.

Takyi’s victory guarantees Ghana a bronze medal which can change to a guaranteed silver if he beats American Duke Ragan in the semifinal matchup on Tuesday.

Black Bombers skipper Sulemana Tetteh and Shakul Samed had earlier been eliminated in their respective bouts, which left Takyi to shoulder the burden of ensuring Ghana did not end the games empty handed. His victory sparked jubilation among officials and other members of the Ghanaian contingent at the games.
