Anthony Cumia Biography
Cumia was born on born in 1960 or 1961, in Flushing, Queens, to an Italian-American family. His siblings are Joe, his older brother, and Dawn, his younger sister. The family lived in East Islip, Elwood, and other Long Island communities. Cumia attended Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip before transferring to Elwood’s Elwood-John H. Glenn High School. He enrolled in acting classes with Joyce MacKenzie. Cumia spent his adolescence living with his father in San Juan Capistrano, California after his parents divorced.
Cumia began his radio career by installing HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. He was inspired to pursue a career in radio by well-known New York City radio hosts Howard Stern and Don Imus.
Cumia first met him when Gregg “Opie” Hughes hosted an O. J. Simpson song parody contest on Long Island radio station WBAB’s Nighttime Attitude show. He and Joe decided to enter the competition, and they recorded a song called “Gonna Electric Shock OJ” to the tune of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” under the name Rotgut.
Hughes discovered the song and played it several times on his show before inviting the Cumias into the studio to sing it live in September 1994. Cumia began producing comic segments for Hughes and the station’s morning show shortly after, in addition to his installation work. Hughes and Cumia decided to start their own radio show in early 1995. Hughes created and distributed an air check to various stations.
The first episode of Opie and Anthony aired in March 1995, after Hughes and Cumia accepted an invitation to anchor afternoons at WAAF in Boston, Massachusetts.
Cumia initially believed that joining the radio industry would result in a very nice income, but later stated that his pay at WAAF was just above the rate of doing physical labor. In April 1998, the two were fired for an April Fool’s Day hoax in which listeners believed Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was killed in a car accident while carrying a young female prostitute from Haiti. According to Cumia, their time on WAAF was the most embarrassing part of his career.
