George Carlin was the younger son of The Sun advertising manager Patrick Carlin, an immigrant from County Donegal, Ireland, and secretary Mary Beary, an American of Irish ancestry. Due to his father’s alcoholism, his parents divorced when he was two months old, and he was raised by his mother Mary Beary, and his older brother, Patrick, Jr.

Carlin enrolled in the United States Air Force at the age of 18 and was trained as a radar technician. He also began working as a disc jockey at Shreveport radio station KJOE but was somewhat unsuccessful in his first foray into the entertainment industry. They split up after two years as a team to pursue individual careers but remained good friends.

Carlin was making around $250,000 per year by the late 1960s, and beginning in the 1970s, he changed his image and routine, morphing into the persona that made him famous. Carlin and his “Seven Dirty Words” comedy routine were pivotal in the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which the justices ruled 5–4 in favor of the government’s authority to regulate indecent material on public airwaves. In 1977, he filmed the first of 14 stand-up comedy specials for HBO.
