Joel Scott Osteen (born March 5, 1963) is a Houston-based American lay preacher, televangelist, businessman, and author. Osteen is one of the more well-known individuals associated with prosperity theology and a focal point of its critics. He is well-known for his weekly televised services and a number of best-selling books.
Osteen is the youngest of six children born to John Osteen and Dolores (“Dodie”) Pilgrim in Houston, Texas. In the back of an old feed store, his father, a former Southern Baptist pastor, founded Lakewood Church (of which Osteen is the current senior pastor).
He graduated from Humble High School, a public high school in the city of Humble, Texas, in 1981, and went on to study radio and television communications at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but did not graduate. He returned to Houston in 1982, founded Lakewood’s television program, and produced his father’s televised sermons for 17 years until his father died unexpectedly of a heart attack in January 1999.
