Lisandro Martinez, an Argentina defender, has spoken out about his post-match conversation with captain Lionel Messi following Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup final victory over France in December.
Messi’s trophy collection was completed after guiding Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In seven games in Qatar, the Paris Saint-Germain forward scored seven goals and supplied three assists.
The 35-year-old also became the first footballer in World Cup history to win the Golden Ball award twice. Martinez insisted to ESPN that he hugged Messi after the 2022 FIFA World Cup final and told him how much he loved him.
The Manchester United centre-back said, “I found Leo and the first thing that occurred to me was to give him a hug. I think I told him, thank you, that I loved him a lot.”
He continued, “It is something unique, full of happiness. We have made many Argentines happy. We have changed their lives. It’s an enormous pride. When we arrived in Buenos Aires, we saw so many people celebrating. I never saw anything like that.”
