The 2023 African Cup Of Nations (AfCON) tournament has been recognized as the most viewed tournament in Africa and as African football fans look forward to witnessing the 34th edition of the biennial continental tournament, a lot of legends from the African football terrain come to share their view on which teams they perceive as favorites for the tournament.
In line with this fact, Nigerian football legend and ex-Chelsea starplayer, John Obi Mikel has come out to share his opinion on which African team he feels stands a high chance of winning the AfCON trophy for next year’s edition.
Nigeria, after being drawn against hosts Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea, will be looking forward to sailing through to the knockout stages of the competition in their quest to win the trophy for the fourth time after winning their third AfCON trophy ten years ago.
According to John Obi Mikel, a player who formed part of the team that won the third AfCON trophy for Nigeria in 2013, the Nigerian team is always considered possible winner of the AfCON trophy and as such they will go into next year’s tournament as top favorites.
He stated that it is obvious most people consider them as favorites for the tournament and though he feels they are not massive favorites, he is hoping the team emulates what he and his teammates did ten years ago.
Mikel Obi reiterated that Nigeria needs to get its football where it’s supposed and he believes winning this year’s AFCON trophy will bring it back to its rightful position.
Expressing his optimism in the ability of the Super Eagles winning the trophy, Mikel Obi made it clear that, he feels being able to repeat what they did in 2013 will be a massive achievement for Nigeria and he believes that is what the country needs right now.
