Robbie Brightwell, a 1948 Olympic silver medalist and half of Britain’s “golden couple” in athletics, died at the age of 82.

Brightwell was a member of the British 4400-meter relay team that finished second at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The British team of Tim Graham, Adrian Metcalfe, and John Cooper, led by Brightwell on the anchor leg, finished second, trailing the US, which set a new world record. Brightwell, on the other hand, was instrumental in another British Olympic gold medal performance.

Brightwell’s fiancée, Ann Packer, had won a silver medal in the 400 meters and was entered in the 800 meters, but she was hesitant to compete because she thought she could spend her time more productively shopping in Tokyo’s affluent Ginza neighborhood.

Would you tell me if I asked you tomorrow if you thought I should run the 800-meter heats? Packer was the one who questioned Brightwell.

“Maybe I should just go shopping and call it a day.”

There was no wow factor in Brightwell’s eyes when he heard his future wife’s proposal.

He questioned, “Shopping?”

“What are you, crazy?

“Shopping?

“We’re not at the Moulsford Village Games; we’re at the Olympics!”
