Leiji Matsumoto, a Japanese manga artist who was born on January 25, 1938, is the author of numerous anime and manga series. Miyako Maki, his wife, is also a manga artist.
Matsumoto was the middle child in a family of seven brothers. During the Pacific War, his father gave him a 35mm film projector, and he watched American cartoons. During this period, he became interested in science fiction novels by Unno Juza and H. G. Wells. He moved to Tokyo at the age of 18 to become a manga artist.
Matsumoto made his debut as Akira Matsumoto in the magazine Manga Shnen in 1954 with Mitsubachi no bken. In 1971, Matsumoto got his big break with Otoko Oidon, a series about the life of a rnin (a young man preparing for university entrance exams). Gun Frontier, a mature-themed dark comedy Western seinen series he created in 1972 for Play Comic magazine, ran from 1972 to 1975. Around the same time, he began Senjo Manga Series, a series of unconnected short stories set during World War II that would eventually become popular under the title The Cockpit.
